The dictionary: ENABLE

All word lists and solvers use the ENABLE (Enhanced North American Benchmark Lexicon) word list — a public-domain lexicon of 168,548 words (2–15 letters) compiled by Alan Beale and M. Cooper. ENABLE was built as an open, tournament-quality reference and is the basis of the word list used by Words With Friends. Because it is public domain, anyone can verify our counts against the original list.

Note that ENABLE differs slightly from proprietary references: the official Scrabble tournament lists (NWL in North America, Collins internationally) and the Wordle answer list (a curated set of roughly 2,300 common words chosen by The New York Times) each include or exclude some words. A word marked valid here is almost always playable, but always defer to your game's official dictionary in competitive play.

Letter scores and tile counts

Scrabble point values and tile distributions are the official standard English set values (100 tiles, including two blanks). Words With Friends values follow Zynga's published letter values. Word scores shown on list pages are face values — the sum of letter points with no board multipliers or bingo bonuses.

How the statistics are computed

• Letter frequency counts every letter occurrence in every ENABLE word (each word counted once). This is dictionary frequency; frequency in running text differs because common short words repeat.
• Wordle statistics are computed over all 5-letter ENABLE words. Starting-word rankings reward distinct letters weighted by how many words contain them — the same heuristic our solver uses to order suggestions.
• Word counts by length are direct counts of the ENABLE lists, published per length with percentage shares.
• Highest-scoring words are exhaustive searches of each length's full list, sorted by face-value score.

Statistics are regenerated from the source lists on every site build, so the published numbers always match the data the interactive tools use.

Language lookups

Rhymes, synonyms, antonyms, and crossword-clue lookups query the free Datamuse API. Definitions come from the free Dictionary API. Only the word or clue you type is sent to these services.

Citing this site

All statistics pages are free to cite with attribution to My Word Kit and a link to the page. Because our source data is public domain, you can also reproduce any figure independently from the ENABLE list.
